Equipment Review - Rehband Knee Sleeves Rehband are one of the world’s leading manufacturers of support gear and their knee supports are frequently regarded as the gold standard for weightlifting knee sleeves. The product reviewed here is Rehband’s “Core Line” knee sleeve, model 7. The company also produce a women’s variant that is better shaped to female ergonomics, the 7. W, but this version is difficult to find unless you buy from Rehband themselves. Knee Sleeves in Weightlifting. While knee sleeves aren’t strictly necessary equipment for weightlifters, many lifters find that using sleeves or wraps can help their joints to move more freely, achieve greater mobility, warm up more quickly and train with less discomfort. This is particularly true of lifters who have experienced knee problems. IWF rules state that knee sleeves or wraps must be one- piece, must not cover more than 3. As a result, the level of support offered by knee sleeves is fairly minimal – wearing them isn’t going to put meaningful kilos on your lifts. However, their use can help to prevent injury and allow you to warm- up more quickly and effectively by helping to keep the knee joints warm, adding some mild compression and maximising blood flow to the muscles and ligaments of the knee. Sizing and Colour. ![]() ![]() Rehband provide a sizing guide on their website that details how to take a measurement to help you buy the correct knee sleeve. Generally, it’s better to size down slightly for a better fit as the neoprene naturally stretches over time. My measurement on the knee was 4. Large and Extra Large and I opted for the smaller size. Please note that once you make your selection, it will apply to all future visits to NASDAQ.com. If, at any time, you are interested in reverting to our default. JPY (Japanese Yen) - Latest News, Analysis and Forex. While they were a little tight at first, after a couple of months of use they are now a really comfortable fit and I’m glad I didn’t go for the XLs. Knee sleeves aren’t exactly known as a stylish piece of attire but Rehband have at least made an effort with the two- tone grey (the front coloured differently from the sides and black and blue trims on the top and bottom respectively. The older version of this product was a plain darker blue with a white trim and this model manages to look a bit more swish without being quite as garish as some of the other knee protection options. Lifting With Rehband Knee Sleeves. I wear my Rehbands for virtually every exercise I do in the gym. Initially, I wore them only for squats and occasionally for heavy cleans but after a bout of mild tendinitis in both knees (patellar in my right knee, quadriceps in my left), I started wearing them for snatches too. In the few weeks since making this change, I’ve noticed that my knees warm up much more quickly at the start of a training session, that instances of tendinitis are greatly reduced and that I’m less likely to get odd clicking sounds from either joint. I’ve also found that my knees tend to ache less between training sessions and that my joints seem to warm up a little quicker, allowing me to spend less time doing reps at light weights simply to get the blood flowing. My workouts are a little bit shorter and I manage to put in more quality reps overall. Potential Shortcomings. Though this issue isn’t exactly unique to Rehbands, probably the biggest drawback of knee sleeves is that they absorb sweat from the legs at an astounding rate and smell absolutely terrible. No exaggeration; after a couple of intense training sessions, they absolutely reek due to the neoprene mopping up perspiration. I’ve found that remembering to take them out of my bag and dry out between training sessions helps a bit but not as much as I’d like. The label on the sleeves warns against more or less any type of washing beyond handwashing at no more than 4. Price is sometimes mentioned as a significant drawback of Rehband knee sleeves and at the best part of . That said, neoprene “medical” grade knee supports, designed for general knee injuries and which I used when I blew out my MCL, aren’t that much cheaper. Boots the Chemist sell them for . Considering the superior construction and greater level of support, the Rehbands offer better value for money. Conclusion. In the three months since I started using Rehband knee sleeves, I’ve noticed a marked improvement in how my knees feel both in and out of the gym. While they certainly don’t help me to lift more weight in a direct sense, having that little bit of extra support is reassuring and allows me to be less hesitant when performing lifts like the jerk. While there are other support options in the form of knee wraps or bandages, the convenience of just being able to pull on the Rehbands and forget about them rather than having to wrap and unwrap my knees between sets makes them a sound investment in my mind. ![]() ![]() The benefits of a consistently ketogenic diet are primarily recognized in the sphere of neurological problems, where there has been evidence of benefit in treating obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease A ketogenic diet is one that encourages your body to rely less on sugar- based fuels and rather to turn to fat and ketones (produced in the liver by metabolizing fat) for fuel. Some folks notice improved mood, sleep, mental focus, blood sugar regulation and reduction of general inflammation. Once you are adapted to a ketogenic diet, going in and out of ketosis intermittently is thought to yield some of the longevity, anti- inflammatory and cancer- fighting benefits previously attributed to calorie restricted diets. Staying in ketosis makes it easier for many people to maintain weight loss. For a good discussion of that process, as well as the research behind that observation, you can read this blog post from the . A ketogenic diet is one that encourages the body to burn fat for fuel and in that process fat burned in the liver produces ketones and a state of ketosis. We naturally burned fat and produced ketones for fuel when we were breast- feeding infants, if we were so lucky to have wise mothers! Since then, most bodies have lost the knack for burning ketones, which is too bad because our sugar- craving brains would be content with a lot less sugar if our bodies remembered how to supply our brains with ketones. On a ketogenic diet, dietary carbohydrates are kept very low, protein is moderate and fat consumption is increased, gently encouraging our body to remember how to rely on fat as a primary fuel and to produce ketones from stored body fat. Even if you are very lean, you have lots more stored body fat, to use in ketone production, than you have stored carbohydrate fuels. Yes, the ketogenic diet is a high fat diet, not the high protein diet which is often portrayed. Reminding your body to burn ketones requires a period of “keto- adaptation” in which severe carbohydrate restriction is paired with high fat consumption. For some folks the adjustment is downright uncomfortable and for others it is quite effortless. You can only know that you are keto- adapted by checking ketones in your blood, which you can do with the Precision Xtra Monitor Glucose And Ketone Test System and Precision Xtra Blood Ketone Test Strips, available through Amazon, but most economically purchased through Universal Drug Store in Canada. You want to see a blood ketone level from 0. Urine ketone testing yields inconsistent results. ![]() ![]() Once you’ve tested for a while, you should be able to “feel” whether you are in ketosis: cheerful, energetic, not hungry even though you haven’t eaten for hours! The diet is usually followed for 4- 6 weeks to achieve full keto- adaptation. I will describe the two methods of ketogenic diets I use with my patients. Caution: People with medical problems, a tendency to gout or kidney stones, or who are serious athletes, will want to consult with a health care practitioner before starting any experimentation with a ketogenic diet. Method One: Protein is kept to a moderate amount because our bodies can turn protein into carbohydrates more easily than they can remember how to burn fat for fuel. So we don’t want to make it too easy. Leafy greens will be your primary vegetable, either in cold salads or cooked alone or in soups or stir- fries. Garlic and onions are good sources of sulfur and feed gut bacteria. We had always controlled his seizures with homeopathic remedies and he has been lovingly cared for by parents and health attendants, requiring extra care as he is blind, non- verbal, and limited in what he can do. He has grown into a strapping young man who unfortunately developed grand mal seizures that homeopathy was not controlling. A trip to the neurologist yielded a prescription for a medication that controlled his seizures but left him nearly asleep. We put him on a ketogenic diet (a gentle one, and his “monitoring” was not by blood tests but by seizure count) that significantly reduced his seizure frequency and severity and enabled us to reduce his prescription to a “homeopathic” amount. If I’m describing you, then you’re either going to hate me or love me by the time you’re done reading this post. The truth is, that orange juice you feel so good about buying is probably none of those things. ![]() You’ve been making assumptions based on logic. The food industry follows its own logic because of the economies of scale. What works for you in your kitchen when making a glass or two of juice simply won’t work when trying to process thousands upon thousands of gallons of the stuff. Haven’t you ever wondered why every glass of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice tastes the same, no matter where in the world you buy it or what time of year you’re drinking it in? Or maybe your brand of choice is Minute Maid or Simply Orange or Florida’s Natural. Either way, I can ask the same question. Why is the taste and flavor so consistent? Why is it that the Minute Maid never tastes like the Tropicana, but always tastes like its own unique beverage? Generally speaking, beverages that taste consistently the same follow recipes. They’re things like Coca Cola or Pepsi or a Starbucks Frappuccino. When you make orange juice at home, each batch tastes a little different depending on the oranges you made it from. I hope you’re hearing warning bells in your head right about now. The reason your store bought orange juice is so consistently flavorful has more to do with chemistry than nature. Making OJ should be pretty simple. Put the juice in a carton and voil. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling– but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. So, the industry uses “flavor packs” to re- flavor the de- oxygenated orange juice: When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Does drinking fruit juice give you high blood pressure? The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. ![]() That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca- Cola has chosen for it. Some companies have even been known to request a flavor pack that mimics the taste of a popular competitor, creating a “hall of mirrors” of flavor packs. Despite the multiple interpretations of a freshly squeezed orange on the market, most flavor packs have a shared source of inspiration: a Florida Valencia orange in spring. As with all industrial foods, it’s because of our convoluted labeling laws. You see, these “flavor packs are made from orange by- products — even though these ? Juice removed from the fruit is just concentrated fructose without any of the naturally- occurring fiber, pectin, and other goodies that make eating a whole fruit good for you. Did you know, for example, that it takes 6- 8 medium sized apples to make just 1 cup of apple juice? You probably wouldn’t be able to eat 6- 8 medium apples in a single sitting. That’s why fruit juice is dangerous. It’s far too easy to consume far too much sugar, and also could stain your teeth, but if you want to keep a nice smile even tho keep drinking juice, you could try some products by Top 9 Rated. So, my first piece of advice is to get out of the juice habit altogether. Sally Fallon Morrell’s Nourishing Traditions cookbook (pictured at right) has several lacto- fermented juice coolers that are pleasant, albeit expensive. See here for where to buy juicers and Vitamix blenders. And finally, opt out of the industrial food system as much as you can. Second best (and more practical for many, including myself) is to pay somebody I trust to do it — like the farmers at my Farmer’s Market, the cattle rancher I buy my annual grass- fed beef order from, or the chef at my local restaurant who’s willing to transparently answer questions about how he sources ingredients and what goes into the dish I’m ordering. Edited On 7/2. 9/2. To Include: I’ve gotten a number of comments and emails accusing me of being afraid of “science” or “chemicals.” To those readers, I suggest that you are missing my point entirely. As I wrote in a comment below, I think what bugs me the most about the flavor industry is that they manufacture flavor for otherwise flavorless or unpalatable foods. I think if a food needs to have synthetic flavors added to it for us to enjoy it, then we ought to question whether or not it’s actually good for us and worth eating. It’s not so much that I think the flavors are unnaturally engineered chemicals (although sometimes, as with MSG, there is cause for concern). In this post, I’m not questioning the health or merit of added chemicals (“natural” or “synthetic”); I’m questioning the health or merit of so- called foods that are so devoid of flavor or color that we have to add back in chemical flavorings and colors to make them palatable. Furthermore, I’m questioning the judgement of our regulatory bodies which allow misleading product labeling to continue. The Pros and Cons of Drinking Orange Juice. Are you a sucker for a morning glass of orange juice? Or do you prefer to eat an orange instead? Oranges are packed with vitamin C, the little miracle vitamin that helps protect against immune system deficiencies and cardiovascular disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends a daily intake of 7. C each day for women, and 9. To get an idea of how much that actually is, a medium sized orange contains 6. Orange juice can help undo the damage of an unhealthy meal on your body by counteracting the inflammatory effects. This is attributed to the fact that oranges have more than 6. Eating a regular orange also provides this health benefit, but it's more likely people will drink a glass of orange juice after a meal, rather than eat an orange. As discussed above, orange juice made from concentrate utilizes the entire orange, so it packs lots of nutritional value. But don't forget about how much sugar regular orange juice contains, which can easily override its health benefits. ![]() Could lentils save your life? Meet the man who became vegan for a month. BibMe Free Bibliography & Citation Maker - MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard. But first, to find out what all this was going to do to my body, I went for a health check at the BUPA Wellness centre in London's King's Cross. After a thorough, hitherto assiduously avoided blood analysis, body mass indexing, cholesterol and weigh- in, I was informed by the doctor that I was overweight and had a cholesterol level of 6. The doctor was deeply sceptical that four weeks as a vegan would be enough to see a difference and said he wouldn't recommend veganism as the body needed meat to function. However, he wished me well and I left, vegan for a month. I started looking for something to eat. None of the fast food eateries cater for vegans, nor the chain shops unless you count a pot of hummus with a couple of sticks of broccoli as food, which I do not. Sandwiches which could have been vegan had been sabotaged with butter or lashings of mayonnaise. Finally I saw a hand- painted store in a sidestreet with a board announcing 'organic cafe' and so it was that my first vegan meal came from Pete's Hemp Store. The shelves heaved with all the things I would normally eschew - lentils, grains and beans - and had that dreary pall which is endemic to health shops. Opposite was a bookshop which had a vegan section but, incredibly, had 'just had a rush on vegan cookbooks'. I bought a couple of the remaining books and noted that they shared shelf space with literature on nudist beaches. So far, most prejudices seemed to be running unchallenged. One surprising thing I discovered on this first day was that Starbucks would make any coffee with a soymilk alternative, so the arms of the corporate chains had not completely cast me adrift. My soy latte was not so bad, a little dryer than usual but with enough of a hint of fatty creaminess for it to become a welcome staple in the month to come. ![]() Confidence returning, I bought a packet of mixed, dried pulses from another health shop and, that evening, soaked them and made myself some bean burgers with a side salad. The taste was very pleasant - admittedly by now I could have eaten a horse - but it gradually became apparent that I hadn't quite followed the instructions carefully enough, as the beans were undersoaked; by bedtime I was bloating badly and spent a very sleepless night swearing that if God had meant for burgers to be made of bean he would not have invented the cow. My first week of being vegan was depressing. I would open the fridge to find nothing worth picking at, nothing to give you that little lift. There is little of sweetness open to the strict vegan; while maple syrup seems to pass the grade, some vegans believe refined sugar is still filtered through the bone- ash of dead cattle to make it white, and even honey (a by- product of 'farmed' bees) is out. So, too, are wine and beer. Their production involves finishing and clarifying; to do this they use 'fining' agents, commonly made of fish bladder or egg albumen. I never realised how much I liked fish in my lager until I was told I couldn't have it. I tried the various oat, rice and soya milks and they were all disgusting in tea, which was now also depleted of its accompanying butter- crime biscuit and hardly seemed worth it. The tumbling disappointment of denial lasted a week, accompanied by a searing detox headache as regular levels of meat, chicken, dairy, saturated fats and excess salt stopped being topped up and my stomach got used to feeling hungrier. Eating out was an unrelentingly disappointing experience as yet another dreary collection of leaves was placed before me. ![]() Drinking out became a different experience, too. While still researching the limitations of wine and beer I drank spirits; as I was used to volume drinking, I ended up drinking three gin and tonics instead of one pint. There are vegan wines but I didn't manage to track any down; at the end of my month I got the good news that Bacardi Breezers were also vegan. It had become apparent that in saying goodbye to old friends I needed to make new ones, so I went to Planet Organic food emporium in London and scoured the labels for acceptable ingredients. I bought things I had never tried before - linseed, pumpkin and furikake seeds, Japanese seaweed, samphire, biorashers (a distant and I suspect disowned relative of bacon), some demonically titled 'Seitan' slices, Cheatin' mince and vegan sausages, yacob root, miso, tempeh, Cheezly (fake cheese) and nuts to boost the protein levels, even a vegan haggis. Vegan food often does itself no favours with naming. I found a Tofurkey in the freezer and a strange yogurt alternative called Soyage, which conjures up several images, none of which verge on palatable. And then there was tofu: this is a form of soya and a critical staple of veganism. It comes in many formats, most of which are disgustingly sloppy, but the smoked and herbed variety is much sturdier and tastes good. Soya has been of some concern recently due to its phytoestrogens (aka feminising plant qualities) but frankly I was too hungry to care. I brought enough bell peppers butternut sqaush, rocket and beetroot, fennel and red peppers and enough sprouting stuff to leave a carnivore begging for mercy. A more exciting fridge full prompted better cooking and I made hot tofu salad, succulent spiced stir fries and antipasti to be eaten with ciabbata. I also got into fake bacon (should that be 'fakon'?) sandes which, once you overcome their arity to insoles, and provided they're eaten piping from the grill, are actually very edible. What they offer and some vegans seem to sniff at is fat, that deeply tasty glutinous substance that is so conspicuously absent from vegetables and grains. Less successful was the ready- made quinoa and pear pudding - like licking a rather slimy carpet - and the Cheezly, a pale, puck- shaped, vacuumpacked 'un'cheese that sat in the fridge uneaten. The alternative, Soya Slices - cheddarstyle square rubbery fellows - met with general disapproval except from my baby, who enjoyed waving them. One sunny day I fell off the wagon: we were in the park and an ice cream hut appeared before me, the Devil disguised in wooden cladding. So why do otherwise perfectly sane people become tofu- powered vegans when vegetarianism already covers the killing of animals? The answer is multifold. First, egg and dairy production requires only the female of the species, so the surplus males are killed at birth or when very young. There is also the view that the treatment of farmed animals is cruel (and this includes bees). It is an uncomfortable fact that, as a meat eater, I am very happily complicit in being removed from the knowledge of how my meat gets to be on my plate, but vegans do not believe in burying their heads in the sand. Other arguments are religion or health- driven. Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympic golds and the International Olympic Committee's 'sportsman of the century', adopted a vegan diet, stating that his best performances were achieved while on this. I imagine Carl had the ear of some very good nutritionists to guide him and I am not convinced my diet was good enough. Before, I used to struggle to eat those elusive five fruit and veg a day, but now as a vegan I was recommended to eat seven - a truly challenging task. In addition, while everything I ate was healthy, it was a learning curve to acquire the necessary protein for energy and growth from the greatly reduced sources now available, and while I got progressively better at eating my beans and lentils, I often felt more tired in the evenings. Last week, my staff nutritionist Laura Schoenfeld wrote a guest post for my blog called “Is a Low- Carb Diet Ruining Your Health”. Perhaps not surprisingly, it has caused quite a stir. For reasons I don’t fully understand, some people identify so strongly with how many carbohydrates they eat that they take offense when a suggestion is made that low- carb diets may not be appropriate for everyone, in all circumstances. In these circles low- carb diets have become dogma (i. Followers of this strange religious sect insist that everyone should be on low- carb or even ketogenic diets; that all carbohydrates, regardless of their source, are “toxic”; that most traditional hunter- gatherer (e. Paleolithic) societies followed a low- carb diet; and, similarly, that nutritional ketosis—which is only achievable with a very high- fat, low- carb, and low- protein diet—is our default and optimal physiological state. Cut through the confusion and hype and learn what research can tell us about low- carb diets. On the other hand, I’ve also observed somewhat of a backlash against low- carb diets occurring in the blogosphere of late. While I agree with many of the potential issues that have been raised about low- carb diets, and think it’s important to discuss them, I also feel it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that low- carb diets can be very effective therapeutic tools for certain conditions and in certain situations. With this in mind, here are 7 things I think everyone should know about low- carb diets.#1: Paleo does not equal low- carb, and very low- carb/ketogenic diets are not our “default” nutritional state, as some have claimed. ![]() Going thru 2nd Saturn return now. When can a low carb diet be beneficial? Should everyone follow a low carb diet? Or, can a low carb diet ruin your health? I've gotten a lot of requests to write this post. Matt Stone's e-book, Diet Recovery really helped me, and I wanted to share my experience with you all. A modern transformational teacher explains that, from a spiritual point of view, marijuana has a negative effect on your soul development. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some low- carb advocates have claimed that most traditional hunter- gatherer societies consumed diets that were very low in carbohydrates. I’ve even seem some suggestions that nutritional ketosis was “the norm” for these cultures. These claims are false. The majority of studies have shown that traditional hunter- gatherer (HG) societies typically consume between 3. Yet even these cultures—such as the traditional Inuit—often made an effort to obtain carbohydrates from berries, corms, nuts, seaweed, and tubers whenever they could, as Richard Nikoley has recently detailed on his blog. ![]() What’s more, contrary to popular claims, studies have shown that it’s unlikely the Inuit spent much time—if any—in nutritional ketosis. Their high protein intake would have prevented ketosis from occurring. With virtually no historical examples of human beings following ketogenic diets for any significant length of time, and few examples of very low- carb diets, it’s difficult to imagine how these diets could be considered our “default” nutritional state or the optimal approach for most people.#2: Low- carb diets are incredibly effective in certain situations. Lest low- carb advocates think that I am anti- low- carb, I’d like to reiterate that both the research and my clinical experience suggest that low- carb diets can be incredibly effective therapeutic tools for certain conditions. These conditions include (but aren’t limited to): Overweight and obesity. High blood sugar, metabolic syndrome, diabetes (both type 1 & type 2)Traumatic brain injury. ![]() Epilepsy. Parkinson’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease. ![]() Other neurological conditions. PCOSI have personally witnessed some remarkable transformations using ketogenic diets therapeutically in my practice. I recall an 8. 4 year- old woman who came to see me complaining of dementia and early- onset Alzheimer’s. She was losing her memory and cognitive abilities at an alarming rate. After just two weeks on a ketogenic diet, this progression not only halted, it reversed: her memory returned, her mind was sharper, and she was far less confused and disoriented. Her family (and her doctor) were stunned, and could hardly believe the changes they were seeing. Yet as impressive as very low- carb (VLC) and ketogenic diets can be in certain situations, that does not mean that these diets may not have some undesirable side effects over the long term—some of which we’re only beginning to understand. For example, as I discussed with Jeff Leach from the American Gut project in a recent podcast, some preliminary research suggests that long- term ketogenic/VLC diets may cause adverse changes to the gut microbiota. It’s worth noting that many of these fibers are found in foods with moderate to high carbohydrate content—foods that would typically be excluded on very low- carb diets. It’s important to note, however, that the beneficial bacteria- starving effects of ketogenic/VLC diets can be at least partially offset by consuming non- digestible, fermentable fibers like resistant starch and non- starch polysaccharides that don’t count toward daily carbohydrate intake. This is something I recommend to all of my patients following low- carb diets)#3: The fact that ketogenic/VLC diets work therapeutically for certain conditions does not make them appropriate in all circumstances, for all people. This assumption is a basic failure of logic, but it’s remarkable to see how often it happens. A person has a life- changing experience with a VLC diet, so they assume that their friend will have a similar experience. Or a clinician that works primarily with people suffering from neurological conditions has great success with ketogenic diets, and then makes the assumption that all people (regardless of their health complaints) will benefit from them. This is akin to saying that since people with hemochromatosis (a genetic condition that causes iron overload) need to limit their iron intake, everyone should consume foods that are low in iron. The belief that “everyone” will benefit from one particular dietary approach—no matter what it is—ignores the important differences that determine what is optimal for each person. These include variations in genes, gene expression, the microbiome, health status, activity levels, geography (e. When it comes to diet, there is no one- size- fits- all approach. Some people may thrive on a long- term, low- carb diet. I have patients and even a family member in this category. And maybe you’re one of them too. But that doesn’t mean everyone will have this experience. If you talk to practicing clinicians who work with patients on a daily basis, or spend any amount of time in internet forums or the comments sections of nutrition blogs, you’ll find numerous reports from people who either experienced no benefit from or were even harmed by following a low- carb diet. What blows my mind is that the “low- carb zealots” seem completely incapable of accepting these reports at face value. Instead, they’ll argue that anyone who doesn’t succeed with low- carb is either doing it wrong, cheating, or somehow imagining their symptoms. What’s the more likely explanation here? That everyone who gets worse with a low- carb diet is either incapable of following directions, weak- willed, or delusional? Or that a low- carb diet simply does not work for everyone? Here’s an example: “A low- carb diet is effective for treating type 2 diabetes. Therefore, eating too many carbohydrates led to this condition in the first place.”This is like saying: Restricting iron is helpful in hemochromatosis patients. Therefore, consuming too much iron is what caused hemochromatosis in the first place. A low- FODMAP diet helps patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Therefore, eating FODMAPs caused IBS in the first place. A low- histamine diet alleviates the symptoms of histamine intolerance. Therefore, histamine intolerance is caused by eating too many histamine containing foods. Or, more ridiculously, since wearing a cast on your arm will help the broken bone heal, the reason you broke your arm in the first place is because you weren’t wearing a cast. It’s true that VLC/ketogenic diets are effective for improving the metabolic markers associated with type 2 diabetes. But that doesn’t mean that eating too many carbohydrates led to the condition in the first place. It is certainly possible (and indeed likely) that eating too many refined and processed carbohydrates, in the form of flour and sugar, contributes to diabetes. But I have not seen a single study suggesting that eating whole- food carbohydrates (e. On the contrary, reviews of prospective studies looking at the relationship between fruit intake and diabetes have found that those with the highest intake of fruit had the lowest incidence of diabetes. For example, there are numerous studies showing that low- carb and ketogenic diets can help with weight loss and metabolic problems. Studies have also shown that calorie- restricted diets, protein- sparing modified fasts, and even low- fat diets can also be effective treatments. They may be able to reverse their condition by following a high- protein, moderate- carbohydrate, moderate- fat diet (such as the Paleo diet with 3. I just mentioned. In #1 above, I referenced studies indicating that most hunter- gatherer societies consumed about 3. These carbohydrates came from starchy tubers and plants, whole fruit, and in some cases, honey. We also have evidence of specific ancestral populations—such as the Kitava, traditional Okinawans, and Tukisenta—that consumed between 7. When it comes to macronutrients, quality is much more important than quantity for most people. Final thoughts. I hope this helps to clarify some of the confusion that has surrounded this issue. Low- carb diets are an effective therapeutic tool in certain situations, and one that I (and many other clinicians) use in my clinical practice. That said, it’s equally true that low- carb—and especially VLC and ketogenic—diets are not appropriate in all circumstances, and they are certainly not our “default” or optimal nutritional state. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to matter how much scientific evidence, clinical experience, and common sense is brought to bear on this question: those who preach and follow low- carb dogma will not be swayed. Creatine monohydrate is the best natural bodybuilding supplement available, according to “Natural Anabolics” author and renowned fitness expert Jerry Brainum. It may also have fat loss and endurance benefits. Known chemically as creatine phosphate, this wonder supplement helps muscles make and utilize adenosine tri- phosphate (ATP) more efficiently. This allows muscles to contract harder, train for longer and repair faster. Another natural effect of creatine use is that muscles store more water, which literally makes your muscles physically bigger. BCAAs or branch chain amino acids can play an important role in both muscle building and fat loss. Leucine, isoleucine and valine are known as the BCAAs, and they are special because they are metabolized differently by the body than other amino acids. Rather than being processed by the liver, they are utilized directly in muscle tissue. This has important ramifications for muscle recovery, as the BCAAs (leucine in particular) act as an anabolic trigger, stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Moreover, they prevent muscle tissue from being broken down and metabolized for energy. ![]() ![]() This allows the body to move on to the next available fuel source, which is body fat. The amino acid L- Arginine is found in many preworkout bodybuilding supplements because of its role as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide vasodilates blood vessels, allowing them to expand and increasing blood flow to muscle tissues. The most recent analysis concludes that NO may also play an important role in fat burning, according to authors Jonathan Lawson and Steve Holman. The combination of green tea extract and caffeine has been shown to increase metabolic rate more than either substance alone or diet and exercise, according to “Homemade Supplement Secrets.” Author Jeff Anderson recommends taking 2.
